Organizers were anticipating about 10,0000 people but nearly 20,000 showed up, police said. Many people climbed roofs and started throwing bottles, as concertgoers smashed together toward the stage, police said.
CBS station WCBS-TV in New York reported the unruly fans started throwing chairs and flowers pots as well, prompting organizers to come to the realization that they didn’t have enough security to allow the show to continue. The NYPD was called in to disperse the crowd and by 7 p.m. the show was over.

An armed gang stole money and a camera from four Chinese journalists in South Africa to cover the World Cup, state media reported Thursday.
Several men attacked the journalists when their car stopped on the side of the road as they returned to Johannesburg after an interview, the reports said.

2010 World Cup – Mandela great-grandchild killed in crash

“Zenani Mandela, 13, was traveling in a car returning from the World Cup Kick-Off Concert at Orlando Stadium when the accident occurred,” a statement from the Foundation said.
Police spokesman Noxolo Kweza said the driver had been arrested and police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.
